Meet the Maker

Hello! First thank you for being on my shop and taking a minute to look around. That alone means more to me than you could ever know.

My name is Micayla and I live near Louisville, Kentucky with my husband and dog, Aloy. I enjoy fantasy stories and video games (which my dog's name is from). My day job is as an office operations manager.

I started with polymer clay in 2020. I dabbled around and enjoyed the medium, but couldn't find anything that I routinely enjoyed making. I found a few polymer clay pen makers and was intrigued, but was a bit shy about starting it since it took some equipment I didn't own.

I started turning pens in 2021 after speaking with a pen maker at a local art show. He encouraged me to give it a try and shop on Craigslist for the lathe. That night I took his advice and found a local person selling a lathe for $50. I jumped in and started making!

I fell in love with the process. I really enjoy making functional art. It is very creative on the front end with the clay designs, and then very relaxing on the back end with the sanding and finishing. That's how Clayigraphy began!

How it’s Made

The pen is made out of polymer clay by wrapping the clay around the pen's tubes and baking! The clay turns into a PVC-type plastic that I then turn on a lathe to bring it to the correct size and smooth it down. The clay is waterproof and is not finished with any other product on this matte pen. Once the pieces have been turned, the pen is fully assembled with a pen press.

FAQ's:

  • Do you take custom orders?
    • Not currently. I would like to export some sort of customization in the future, but I don't currently have the capacity. If you have a certain color or style you would be interested in, shoot me a DM on Instagram and I'll look into making one and putting it for sale on the site!
  • How do I clean/maintain my pen?
    • The pens are made of polymer clay that dries into a PVC type plastic. Most of the pens are also sealed with CA glue (essentially super glue). Do not clean the pens with rubbing alcohol as it can wear down the clay. You can clean with a damp cloth or soap and water as necessary.
  • How expensive are the ink refills?
    • This depends on the quality of refill you purchase. There are some high tier brands out there and their price reflects their quality. For the more generic refills you can find at office stores would be about $5 - $8 per refill.
  • What kind of clay do you use?
    • I use polymer clay! This is different than pottery clay. Polymer clay is a type of plastic that hardens when baked in the oven. I mainly use Cernit brand, but I also use Sculpey Premo occasionally.
  • What's the difference between Cross refills and Parker refills? Are they interchangeable?
    • The type of refill is not interchangeable! You can see on the last photo of every pen listing what the refill for that pen looks like. Cross refills are threaded and screw into the pen mechanism. Parker refills drop in to a pen and retract and extend using a spring.
  • What's the difference between ballpoint pens, rollerball pens, and fountain pens?
    • Ballpoint pens are the most comment type of pen you will come across. Ballpoint pens will not dry out even if they are left open. This is how they can be used in twist and click Pens since the tip is always exposed to air. Rollerball pens use a water based ink. This means they will dry out if you leave them uncapped. Rollerball ink smudges more easily as well. However, they offer a smoother writing experience and often will feel like they glide across the page with little to no effort. Fountain pens can be refilled with ink jars and will dry out as well. They write smoothly but take practice to write with consistently due to the nib being different than typical pens.
